For Yara Mekawei and Amir Rezk, this ancestral inheritance, an unexplained transmission from a grandmother’s past, that reverberates noisily through their lifelines. To occupy a human body for thirty-three years is to arrive at a cosmic hinge. In esoteric geographies, these are the coordinates where the vertical axis of the divine cuts through the horizontal line of human history; the moment the Word fully wrestles with the weight of the flesh.
In 33., Mekawei and Rezk treat this chronological marker not as a static historical artifact, but as an active, open portal. Drawing from their immersion in Coptic text and Egyptian linguistic roots, they listen to the truths of Christ’s salvation mirroring it into a personal journey of material and spiritual compositions. Here, the sacred sequence of incarnation, descent, and resurrection is approached as a soul anatomy, a blueprint of suffering and synthesis that echoes directly within the artists' own state of migrations, displacements, and internal reckonings.
The sonic architecture of 33. mirrors this deep existential alchemy. Dark orchestral strings dissolve into dense electronic static, while sacred vocal fragments are swallowed by the vast,
negative space of a sonic desert. Operating at the intersection of electroacoustic friction and ancient Coptic Orthodox texts, the music strips away the boundary between the sacred and the utterly physical.
The artists' private geographies marked by severe departures, profound spiritual encounters, and the quiet parallels of their own endurance are woven directly into the fabric of the sound.
